Weaving Heritage
Double Ikat is hailed globally as one of the most intellectually demanding textile crafts ever conceived. Unlike standard weaving where dyed threads are simply crossed, double ikat requires that both the warp (longitudinal) and weft (transverse) mulberry silk threads are dyed beforehand in exact geometric alignment.
When woven on the traditional slanted loom, the patterns emerge thread by thread. The result is a luminous, perfectly reversible masterpiece where the front and back of the saree are identical in intensity and detail.
Because only master Salvi weaver families in Patan possess the generational mathematical calculations for this sacred craft, each double ikat Patola saree is an ultra-rare heirloom of extraordinary heritage value.
Every double ikat saree at Majestic Patola is ethically sourced with direct artisan provenance, generational master craftsmanship, and 100% pure mulberry silk.
A Patola saree is a double ikat woven silk saree traditionally crafted in Patan, Gujarat, India. The defining characteristic is the resist-dyeing of both warp and weft threads before weaving, producing perfectly symmetrical, vibrant geometric patterns on both sides of the fabric. Patan Patola holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, making it one of India's most protected textile heritage crafts. A single saree can take anywhere from 6 months to 4 years to weave.
Patan Patola uses the double ikat technique — where both the warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving — making it reversible and extremely rare. Only a handful of Salvi weaver families in Patan still practise this 900-year-old craft. Rajkot Patola uses the single ikat technique, where only the warp threads are dyed. This makes Rajkot Patola more accessible in price while retaining the vivid geometric patterns and pure silk quality characteristic of Patola weaving.
Authentic Patan Patola sarees (double ikat) range from ₹50,000 to over ₹5,00,000 depending on the complexity of the pattern, silk quality, and weaving duration. Rajkot Patola (single ikat) sarees are priced between ₹8,000 and ₹80,000. At Majestic Patola, our handcrafted pieces are sourced directly from master weavers in Patan and Rajkot, ensuring fair artisan compensation and 100% pure silk quality.
An authentic Patan Patola saree is perfectly reversible — the pattern appears identical on both sides of the fabric. The colours are woven into the threads, not printed. The weave reflects authentic Gujarat handloom heritage. The saree will feel slightly heavy due to pure mulberry silk. At Majestic Patola, every piece is directly sourced from verified master weavers, crafted from 100% pure mulberry silk.
